Is there anything more fundamental to any nation than alcohol? If there’s something you can rely on in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, it is alcohol!
Most countries have their own unique spin on the alcoholic drink. Even some countries in the Middle East, a region notorious for its prohibition, have “araq,” a Levantine alcoholic spirit from the anis drinks family. In the early days of human history, alcohol was added to drinks to rid them of bacteria so they would be safe to consume.
This seemingly magical liquid and its consumption have evolved along with world culture. People drink for celebration, for mourning, for relaxation, or for forgetting.
As a demonstration on how alcohol has burrowed itself through society and into our consciousnesses, here’s an infographic about drinking habits around the world. May it help you in your travels. Cheers! Santé! Prost! Kampai!
