The 2012 data from FoodNet (which only recorded 15% of the American population) revealed that 19,531 laboratory-confirmed cases had been caused by Cryptosporidium, Shigella, Campylobacter, Escherichia coli (STEC) O157 and non-O157, Salmonella, and Yersinia infection were highest among children aged 5 years and below. Globally, 1.9 million children die because of these foodborne illnesses.
