How do I become a Certified Food Protection Manager in Georgia?

If you need to get your food manager certification in Georgia, you must first complete a food manager training course and pass an ANAB-accredited exam.

You can easily meet these requirements with Learn2Serve by 360training. Our course is approved in Georgia and our Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) exam is ANAB-accredited. Begin today!

What are the Georgia food safety regulations?

Under Georgia Food Service Rules and Regulations 511-6-1-.03(3), food service establishments that serve potentially hazardous food need at least one supervisory employee to be a Certified Food Safety Manager (CFSM).

An individual can only serve as the CFSM for one establishment. They don't need to be on-premises at all times, but they do need to designate someone else to be in charge during operating hours when they're not present.

To become a CFSM, you need to complete a food safety training program approved by the Georgia Department of Public Health and pass an exam accredited by an organization like the American National Standards Institute Conference for Food Protection (ANAB-CFP).

Learn2Serve by 360training is approved to provide both the training and the exam.

We always recommend checking with your local health department for any additional certification and training requirements.

How long is the food manager certification good for?

Georgia regulations just say that food manager certification should be renewed according to the accrediting organization's requirements.

ANAB CFPM certification has to be renewed every five years. To renew your certification, you need to re-take the Certified Food Protection Manager exam.

Be sure to check your local regulations, in case county or municipal requirements call for more frequent training.

Can you take the Georgia food manager exam online?

Yes, your exam will be administered through our online proctor service. The Learn2Serve Food Protection Manager Certification Exam is accredited by the American National Standards Institute and the Conference for Food Protection (ANAB-CFP).

Who should get their food manager certification?

Under Georgia regulations, the CFSM has to be an employee with supervisory and management responsibility and the authority to direction and control food preparation and service. That means it's usually owners, head chefs, and managers who earn food manager certification.

Many restaurants and other retail food establishments require all their managers and chefs above a certain level to earn certification as a condition of employment.

What does a food manager do and how can they improve food safety?

Food managers control many different areas of a business: customer service, operations, team management, and human resources.

But food safety is a big one. Ensuring food safety involves every part of the business, including:

  • Understand all food safety regulations and make certain their establishment can ace an inspection
  • Train all employees in food safety principles and protocols
  • Manage food safety policies, procedures, and protocols
  • Enforce the proper implementation of food safety standards
  • Maintain accurate records of food safety data
  • Confirm that all third-party suppliers and their deliveries meet food safety standards
  • And more

Due to the level of accountability, food managers earn a significantly higher salary than servers and other food employees. According to wage data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, here is the average amount of money you can expect to make in senior management positions in the Georgia foodservice industry:

Job Title Average Hourly Wage  Average Yearly Wage
Food Service Manager  $25.32  $52,660
Chef  $25.43  $52,890

Georgia-approved food safety manager certification is an important qualification for getting one of these jobs.

Why are food managers in Georgia required to get ANAB certification?

Foodborne illness is a significant hazard in every state, including Georgia. According to data from the Center for Science in the Public Interest, over a 10-year period (2003-2012), there were a total of 198 foodborne illness outbreaks. And the two most common pathogen found were Salmonella and Norovirus—both preventable with the right food safety protocols in place.

Because food service managers have extensive food safety responsibilities, they're perfectly positioned to prevent foodborne illness outbreaks in their establishment. Demonstrating their knowledge by earning ANAB certification is one way to prove they're qualified to do what's needed.

ANAB-accredited certification programs meet the highest standards in food safety, proven by the fact that the ANAB CFPM program has been endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
