Texas Food Handler Certificate

Food handling is sure to become more in demand in the next few years, thanks to the lively activities that restaurants are contributing to the local Texas economy. Receipts are projected to amount to 40.8 billion this year, and with over 39,296 dining and bar locations, the F & B scene is definitely bound to grow bigger and better.

With the tremendous tax revenues being generated, restaurant owners are striving to keep the customers coming by constantly providing a healthful place to dine for their guests. This would be impossible of course with the presence of foodborne illnesses in the establishment. To keep the highest standards and safest environment for guests, Texas food handlers have to possess a Texas Food Handlers Card as proof of their competency and education in such matters.

A Texas food handlers card (also referred to as a Texas food handlers permit) is obtained following the completion of a Texas food handler certification course. The two-hour course covers food safety issues, rules and methods of maintaining a food-safe environment and satisfies the requirement imposed by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

The food handler course essentially provides a quick review of food safety practices and standards observed by the food and beverage industry. This allows employees to influence coworkers of implementing safe food handling practices while protecting themselves of liabilities and marring their employer’s reputation from the potential damage a foodborne illness outbreak can bring to the establishment.

F & B employees who would like to customize their learning experience can also choose from the following Texas Food Handler bundles that include Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission certification training and Class C UST Operator training,

  1. TABC + Texas Food Handler
  2. Texas Solutions: Food & Beverage Training
  3. State Approved Texas Food Handler (All Counties)+TABC Seller-Server Training (Texas) and Class C UST Operator
  4. State Approved Texas Food Handler (City of Plano)+TABC Seller-Server Training (Texas) and Texas Class C UST Operator

As per Title 25, Part 1, Chapter 229, Subchapter K, Rule §229.178 (d)(2) of the Texas Administrative Code, the certificate is valid statewide as proof of food handler training course completion, provided that it is obtained from an e-learning provider accredited by the department. Counties however have the right to change renewal periods, requirements and registration fees with regard to the training.
