Salmonella is one of the most common causes of food poisoning in the United States. It is a group of bacteria that can cause diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps for 4-7 days.

What are the sources of Salmonella in food?

  • Contaminated eggs
  • Poultry
  • Meat
  • Unpasteurized milk or juice
  • Cheese
  • Contaminated raw fruits and vegetables
  • Spices
  • Nuts

How Can I Prevent Salmonella?

In preventing Salmonella, the following tips must be observed in a food establishment:

  • Cook meat and eggs thoroughly. Do not eat or drink food with raw eggs, or raw milk.
  • If you are served undercooked meat, poultry or eggs in a restaurant, don’t hesitate to send it back to the kitchen for further cooking.
  • Practice handwashing and use clean and sanitized utensils.
  • Take caution in food preparation for infants, pregnant women and the elderly.

Be safe from Salmonella in your food establishments by enrolling in Food Safety Training at Learn2Serve. This course would be a great benefit to workers handling all types of food in order to prevent foodborne illness outbreaks like Salmonella.
