What is a Food Handlers Card?

Also known as a food worker card in several states, a food handler card is a permanent card obtained through food handler training. Along with a food handler certification, a food handler card serves as proof of your food handler course completion during inspections.

It is important to keep the food handler card with you on premises at all times during your shift should authorities and inspectors need you to produce it. However, if you lost your card, you have to contact your local food and health department to get a new copy and pay for its replacement fee, unlike with your food handler certification which you can simply reprint from your Learn2Serve account online.

Employment Opportunities for Food Handler Card Holders

The added employment benefits of possessing a food handlers card are handy not just in the food and beverage industry, but also those relating to it. It enables one to work as a food handler in a food packaging and manufacturing environment and in similar food facilities as well as in the kitchens of restaurants and bars. Also, according to a recent study, managers tend to favor hiring applicants with food handler cards rather than those without non-card holders. It goes without saying how indispensable having a food handler card is, regardless if it’s state-mandated or not.

Finding Work before Receipt of Food Handler Card

It takes a few days to receive the food handler card following course completion. Learn2Serve will report your course credits to the commission in-charge, which will then issue a food handler card for you.  On the other hand, you don’t have to wait for a couple of days to be able to print your certification for completing the food handler training program. The certificate is available for download and printing on your virtual university account.

You can start looking for work the moment you get your certification. In fact, you may work for up to 14 days in some states before you get your card. Your certification already gives future employers assurance of you receiving a food handler card. Finding work shouldn’t also be a problem for you as there are also employers that provide training to employees themselves.
