How do I become a Certified Food Protection Manager in North Dakota?
If you need to get your food manager certification in North Dakota, you need to complete a food manager training course and pass an ANSI-accredited exam. Learn2Serve by 360training can help! Our course and Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) exam are ANSI-accredited. They're also approved in North Dakota's First District Health Unit. Begin now!
What are the North Dakota food safety regulations?
Food protection manager certification for at least one manager is recommended in North Dakota.
Some local health authorities require Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) training, however.
For example, as of 2020, the First District Health Unit (FDHU) requires a CFPM in charge at all times at establishments that are risk level 2 or that have ten or more food employees. Other health districts may have their own requirements.
To qualify as a CFPM in the FDHU or in establishments governed by the North Dakota Food Code, you need to pass an approved CFPM course and exam like the ones offered at Learn2Serve by 360training.
How long is the food manager certification good for?
ANSI's CFPM certification is generally valid for a maximum of five years. Be sure to check your local regulations for any specific requirements.
Can you take the North Dakota food manager exam online?
Yes, your exam will be administered through our online proctor service. The Learn2Serve Food Protection Manager Certification Exam is accredited by the American National Standards Institute and the Conference for Food Protection (ANSI-CFP).

Who should get their food manager certification?
North Dakota Department of Health recommends that the person to earn certification is someone with supervisory or management responsibility over food preparation, food service, and/or training staff. Generally, this will mean the owner/operator, a manager, or a head chef.
In the FDHU, where a CFPM is required on duty during all operating hours, larger restaurants, grocery stores, or other businesses will need shift managers or department managers to be certified, as well.
What does a food manager do and how can they improve food safety?
Food service and restaurant managers have many responsibilities, from customer service to operations to human resources and team management.
But their food safety duties touch almost every part of their job. They must:
- Know local food safety regulations inside and out
- Designing appropriate policies and protocols to minimize food safety hazards
- Maintain records of a valid food worker card for each employee where required; train employees in food safety where food worker cards are not required
- Monitor the proper execution of food safety protocols and correct errors as needed
- Confirm that all third-party suppliers and their deliveries meet food safety standards
- And more
Due to the level of responsibility, food managers earn a significantly higher salary than servers and other food employees. According to wage data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, here is the average amount of money you can expect to make in senior management positions in the North Dakota foodservice industry:
Job Title | Average Hourly Wage | Average Yearly Wage |
---|---|---|
Food Service Manager | $26.30 | $54,700 |
Chef | $22.27 | $46,320 |
North Dakota-approved food safety manager certification is an important qualification for getting one of these jobs.
Why are food managers in North Dakota required to get ANSI certification?
Foodborne illness is a significant risk throughout the United States, including North Dakota. According to data from the Center for Science in the Public Interest, over a 10-year period (2003-2012), there were a total of 51 foodborne illness outbreaks. And the two most common pathogens found were Norovirus and Salmonella—both preventable with the right food safety protocols in place.
Given a manager's extensive food safety responsibilities, they're best situated to thwart foodborne illness outbreaks. Earning ANSI-accredited CFPM certification is a good way to ensure they're qualified for the task.
That's because ANSI CFPM programs meet the highest standards in food safety. ANSI CFPM certification has been endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
